SPREAD THE CHEER
SPREAD THE CHEER
Happy Vaisakhi Readers!

Having been born and raised in the Northern part of India, it is a bliss for me to be a part of so many happy festivals. Baisakhi or Vaisakhi, as popularly known, is the festival that marks the onset of Harvest - all the seeds that you’d sown, nurtured and waited to ripen, are now ready for the harvest.

Harvesting is not just an agricultural activity but also a life lesson. How I see it, is to have all the fruits of your hard work ripe and ready to be picked. Farmers are the most hardworking and patient beings of all, I believe. They sow, they nurture and then wait endlessly. A crop cannot be harvested until it is the right time or one cannot be lazy when it is the time to harvest.

It would be a life-changing experience if we start looking at every activity that we do, it could be learning a new skill, or studying something specifically, and practice it the way a farmer does! What do you think about it?

The Jallianwala Bagh - Let’s Dig History

April 13th, 1919, like today, it was Baisakhi, the happiest festival of North India celebrated to mark the on-set of harvest. At the same time, the Colonial British Government had imposed strict bans under the Rowlatt Act which extended war-time restrictions even when the World War was over - these included restrictions on freedom of press and arrests without a warrant. Outraged Indians gathered in different spots for peaceful protests following the norms set by Mahatma Gandhi.

Being a community festival, thousands gathered in a park called ‘the jallianwala bagh’, along with elderly and children. British Brigadier General Dyer, upon hearing about the gathering, came there with his troop of 50-armed men and opened fire at them, killing about 1000s of innocent men, women and children. This was the most horrific incident that infuriated even more anger in the minds of the people.
Let’s see, how the Britishers saw it:

“That is an episode which appears to me to be without precedent or parallel in the modern history of the British Empire,” Winston Churchill, who was then serving in the cabinet as war secretary, told British lawmakers July 1920. “It is an extraordinary event, a monstrous event, an event which stands in singular and sinister isolation,” added Churchill.

On 13 March 1940 Udham Singh shot and killed Michael O’Dwyer the British Lieutenant-Governor of Punjab at the time of the massacre who had approved General Dyer’s action and was believed to be the main planner. Udham Singh was hanged on 31 July 1940. In 1952, Udham Singh received the title of Shaheed by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Story of a Caterpillar

Now let’s start with a story of a not so colourful Butterfly. This is the story of a butterfly who always imagined sunny dreams of the day , when she will have the most colourful wings… but what happens when her dreams are disappointed.

Once there was a not so colourful butterfly, named Sunny. She had started like any regular colourful caterpillar, with bright green colour and yellow and black spots on her back.

She loved climbing trees and gorge on ripe , juicy green leaves and berries right after rains.
She also loved to tell tales of adventure.
Her head was full of stories of adventures of witches, dragons, Brave heroes who fought the dragons, and princesses who spoke their minds.
She loved to tell tales to her friends, out in the sunlight and at night , by the light of the moon , she spun interesting tales and her friends loved to listen to her.
Sunny and her friends dreamed of spinning their chrysalis and transform into bright colourful butterflies
One day, on a late winter day, Sunny started to spin its chrysalis.

She hung up upside down from a branch.
After two weeks of work, Sunny popped out in excitement !
She imagined how beautiful her wings would be, and she could not wait to see her reflection in the water in a nearby pond.
But to her dismay !
She gasped in disappointment, she cried out ! No!

She stepped back on gazing at her reflection.
She couldn’t believe her eyes.
Staring back at her from her reflection was a black butterfly with not a single speck of colour.
This was not what she had imagined
What did her friends look like, she wondered?
She started to fly quietly, hidden in the shade of the leaves.
What will her friends say , when they find her !
If only I could be a caterpillar again, she thought..

Earth's Crust: How it matters?

It all started a billions of years ago, when no one knew there would be life on Earth or when there was actually no one to know even, the Earth started out as a hot, viscous ball of rock. The heavy metals, mostly iron and nickel, sank to the center of the new planet and became its core. The molten material that surrounded the core is what we named as mantle.

Do you know, due to restricted movement amid Coronavirus outbreak, there has been a significant lower seismic noise on a small @raspishake seismometer running in West London. This is a month of data for station R091F. The average noise levels are down reflecting fewer trains, buses and cars.

Over millions of years, the mantle cooled. The water that got trapped inside the minerals erupted with lava, a process that we understand as “outgassing.” As more and more water outgassed, the mantle solidified. Metals or materials that initially stayed in their liquid phase during this process, called “incompatible elements,” ultimately solidified only to become Earth’s brittle crust.

Earth’s crust is composed of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks, or in simple language everything from mud and clay to diamonds and coal. The most abundant rocks in the crust are igneous, which are formed by the cooling of magma. Metamorphic rocks have undergone drastic changes due to heat and pressure. Slate and marble are familiar metamorphic rocks. Sedimentary rocks are formed by the accumulation of material at Earth’s surface. Sandstone and shale are sedimentary rocks.

What we simply understand as earthquakes, or shaking of the earth, the activity causing it is the dynamic geologic force that is responsible for creating Earth’s crust, and the crust continues to be shaped by the planet’s movement and energy. Today, tectonic activity is responsible for the formation (and destruction) of crustal materials. Read less

Optimistic Nihilism

These are things which are not confirmed, therefore please take everything with a grain of salt.

The universe started out by something most of the world agrees is the big bang. If this theory is true then we think about how we are considered alive. If people came from the earth and the earth came from particles then that means we came from particles. If we consider ourselves alive then we don’t understand what does it mean and how did we become living when we are made from non-living particles.

People also know that one day like all things, this universe will end, if this is true then that means none of the things we do matter, every embarrassment, crime, wrong thing we have felt or done won’t matter either. We all will die and since nothing will control it and nothing will matter, we, humans, who are positive in nature, should try to do the best we can to change the life of ourselves, better if we change the life of others and even better if we can change the entire world by helping in human development.

Scientists even say that we might be stimulated, we feel we are real but are actually controlled, same goes in this case; we should do the best we can to bring change as that is our purpose and change is nature. If nature wants, we may be a negative change to balance a positive change.
At this stage, our end is far beyond our lives, we have got other things to worry about. Even if nothing is real and nothing matters, why not try to save a planet which will also eventually die just for fun and for the sake of being human. We are the senses of the universe to feel itself.

Think of it this way, In a game of tic tac toe, it is almost certain you will draw the game but you still play the game just for fun. Life is a game that you play until you are bored or until you want to quit. If you are bored at the beginning from playing a game you want to change it with power ups, variations to make it interesting. Similarly we develop, increase our knowledge of the universe and socially interact with other players, to play the game better.

The Holy Plan

The holy plan of nature is made to work in peace and harmony, but with time, man has learnt to rule and invade others by disturbing the peace of nature. Human beings who were once the supreme creation of nature, are now bringing violence, aggression and agitation in the world.

The world is in a mad race to conquer each other. More space, facilities and comforts are the only aim of life. The development and progress are measured with number of materialistic things but all this is achieved at the cost of peace. The world has been divided into communities on the basis of caste, creed and races. There is a fight for rights but there is no obligation towards duties to protect the world.

The only weapon to save mankind on earth is peace which can be achieved by introspection, meditation or similar paths adopted by us.There is a constant need to re-judge and re-explore these. Various social evils have raised their heads, like poverty, corruption and communal disharmony which are resulting in the end of natural instincts and emotions of life.

In spite of bringing mutual understanding and brotherhood, the world is inclined to have bloodshed under the face of terrorism. Unfortunately, violence has conquered the wisdom and the existence of peace is considered only the realism of human imagination. People are living in fear and struggle to bend their enormous desires to achieve education, self-reliance and a peaceful atmosphere. Innocent people are getting killed in the name of social evils and are stretching their hands to come out of these trials and tribulations. The need of the hour is to bring back the ideology of Gandhi, the approach of Nelson Mandela and the selfless services of Mother Teresa.

Life is all dependent on gadgets, devices and machines. Once, machines were discovered for man but now man is incomplete without these machines. The rush of technology has spread everywhere and we have left no time to stand and stare. The youth has to come out of the crowd and change their line of expensive clothes, attractive luxuries to peace and harmony to remove the remorse and desolation which are veiling mankind.

The deteriorating environmental conditions, the extinction of many species, the water reservoirs getting contaminated and the depleting natural sources add to the difficulties of life. The world is in need of correct and practical solutions. Different options have been tried at different places in the name of progress of mankind, communal harmony and peace oriented globalization, but all in vain. A hope to bring peace by joining hands and working together to save the planet earth, life and culture can initiate some result and delight. The efforts to reach every heart, to make the people think on ideology " live and let the others live" can only be the source of peaceful life. Human history shows that the individualistic and egocentric personality of rulers had always brought the destruction on this earth. Even today the history is seeming to get repeated where the same self centered leaders are ready to bring the same doctrines but the youth is inclined to work meticulously, diligently and intelligently to lay down the tough principles to follow and practice to save mankind and to bring peace and harmony. In this age when globalization has firmly fixed its roots and is spreading far and wide, the administration is centralized in few strong hands, it is for all and not only for the benefit of those living under such difficult situations to work in the direction of peace.

The higher the ambition the greater must be the efforts to fulfill it. The teachings at universities and institutions are now laying adequate stress on the principles, theories, doctrines, observations and practical approach to bring a peaceful atmosphere in this world. The teachers, businessmen, executives, officers, statesmen and politicians need to correct the understanding , timely implementation of plans and desired success in this respective field, so let us start, wake-up and move ahead with priceless efforts to bring peace, inner strength of confidence, determination - neither doing wrong nor working for selfish personal gains. Proper education to all should openly be declared courageously to work on the principles of human welfare and universal peace,it is required to be thought upon and worked upon by disciplined and dedicated students, wise and commanding teachers, prolific and honest writers. The humanity which is grabbed, eaten up and finished by human beings is dominated by few but can achieve relief from this system only by us. It is very rightly said that if you want to change the fruits, you have to change the roots.
