This Day for You - June 22

SPOTLIGHT:

A confusing moment is history! On June 22nd 1555, Emperor Humayun declared his son Akbar as his heir apparent. But note that he didn’t transfer the kingship right then! It was the day of his victory over the Suri dynasty and he possibly announced his son, Akbar as the legal heir. The Mughals remain India’s most famous ruling dynasty and ruled India from 1526 to 1857 AD. The first Mughal was Babur, Babur’s son was Humayun who first ruled from 1530 AD to 1540 AD and then from 1555 AD to 1556 AD.
But did you know how Akbar became the ‘Emperor of India’? In March 1956, Humayun fell down the stairs of his library to his premature death. The Emperor was climbing down the stairs, his arms full of books when he heard the call for prayer. As was his habit upon hearing the call for prayer, he bowed his knee in reverence and his robes got entangled in his foot and he came tumbling down the stairs and his head on the edge of a stone. Humayun died three days later and his son Akbar, only thirteen at that time inherited his throne and became Emperor of India.
Interestingly enough, on this day, much later in 1948, King George VI formally gave up the title "Emperor of India", which also marked the deletion of the title from history!

Mary Louise "Meryl" Streep: She is an American actress. Often described as the "best actress of her generation", Streep is particularly known for her versatility and accents. Nominated for a record 21 Academy Awards, she has won three. Among other accolades, she has received a record 32 Golden Globe nominations, and has won eight.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

1633: Pope forced Galileo Galilei to take back his view that the Sun is the centre of the universe and not earth. (on Oct 31, 1992, Vatican admits it was wrong)

1675:Royal Greenwich Observatory was established in England by Charles II

1825:British Parliament abolished feudalism and the seigneurial system in British North America

1847: As per some stories Donut was invented on this day. According to legend, 180 years ago today on June 22, 1847, Captain Gregory, then a 16-year-old crewman aboard a schooner transporting limestone allegedly poked a hole in a lump of dough, which was then fried to create the world’s first doughnut. Hurray! Celebrate by indulging in baking a Donut today! (Recipe in Stay-at-home activity)

1870: US Congress created the Department of Justice.

1941:Operation Barbarossa: Nazi Germany and its allies invaded the Soviet Union during WWII, it is considered the largest military operation in history.

Gene Deitch

Eugene Merril Deitch, August 8, 1924 – April 16, 2020, was an American illustrator, animator, comics artist, and film director. Deitch was known for creating animated cartoons such as Munro, Tom Terrific, and Nudnik, as well as his work on the Popeye and Tom and Jerry series.

After graduating, He began working for North American Aviation, drawing aircraft blueprints. In 1955, Deitch took an apprenticeship at the animation studio United Productions of America, and later became the creative director of Terrytoons. Beginning in 1955, Deitch wrote and drew the United Feature Syndicate comic strip The Real-Great Adventures of Terrible Thompson! A skit about Terrible Thompson had been recorded by Little Golden Records.

In August 1958, he was fired from Terrytoons and set up his studio in New York called Gene Deitch Associates, Inc., which primarily produced television commercials. Munro premiered as a short preceding Breakfast at Tiffany's. It won an Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1961, the first short created outside of the United States to be so honored. From 1960 to 1963, Deitch directed 13 new Tom and Jerry shorts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc.

The real reason Tom and Jerry have lasted 75 years was because Tom never gives up in his eagerness to catch Jerry, and Jerry never loses a fight. He is resourceful, courageous, and stronger than he looks. In almost all the early cartoons there is a renewed gag when Jerry grabs a board and bashes Tom's behind with great force and verve. He enjoys dispensing the pain.

The cartoons are known for some of the most violent cartoon gags ever devised in theatrical animation. A total of 114 Tom and Jerry shorts were produced by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer cartoon studio from 1940–1958, starting with Puss Gets the Boot. Seven of these cartoons won an Academy Award for Animated Short Film. Tom and Jerry still holds the record of the most awards in the Animated Short Film category, which is tied for first place with the Walt Disney musical production Silly Symphonies.

Some Fun Facts about Fathers’ Day

This year we celebrated Fathers’ Day in the most unique manner, isn’t it? With our handmade sanitized cards, and fresh, homemade cakes, and self-inflated balloons, it was an unusual celebration. This year itself has been so unusual that yesterday felt extra special than any other previous years. Our fathers, our heroes have been bravely taking care of our health and hygiene like silent Messiahs. Even the fathers who are battling COVID-19 or have an infected family member, are only setting examples for us of how to be courageous and strong even in the most extreme of situations. And they are doing it with a smiling face. On this note, let us also look at some fun facts about Fathers’ Day and keep yesterday’s memories alive in our hearts for the rest of this remaining year.

1) Fathers’ Day is celebrated at different times in different parts of the world. It is mainly celebrated within the months of March, May and June. In India, Fathers’ Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of June. Not only indoors, but the entire universe celebrated this year’s Fathers’ Day in a unique way. Do you think it was just a coincidence that our first solar eclipse also took place on the same day?

2) Father-daughter duos are more popular and this fact will tell you why. The idea of Fathers’ Day was proposed by Sonora Smart Dodd of the United States. Her father, William Jackson Smart, was an American Civil War Veteran.

3) Apart from serving the country, Sonora’s father was a full-time father. He raised Sonora and her five siblings after her mother died tragically. Sonora had seen her father raise six children effortlessly while making the entire Nation proud. She couldn’t but become an admirer of her father and wanted to assign a day for all the brave, hard working fathers of the world.

4) Fathers’ Day was first celebrated in 1910 in America. In 1966, President Lyndon B. Jackson issued the first presidential proclamation honouring Fathers’ Day and assigned the third Sunday of June for its celebration. In 1972, President Nixon made it a permanent National Holiday.

5) In India, since the ancient times, Fathers have been celebrated as friends, philosophers and guides. For example:
In Ramayana where Prince Rama leaves all his wealth and pleasures of courtly life behind on just one command of his father King Dasharatha.
Bhisma, another character from Mahabharata led a life of celibacy for the betterment of his father King Santanu.
Even in our history, we find Mahinda and Sanghamitra, children of King Ashoka, spread the religion Buddhism in neighbouring countries of India.
And finally, we call Gandhi the ‘Father of our Nation.’

So you see, our Indian tradition has always celebrated fathers in its own way. Just like we celebrated them in our own way yesterday. How fun was your Fathers’ Day celebration?

Yoga: Some myths and facts

Yesterday was the International Yoga Day, where people all over the world gather together to practice the invaluable gift of Vedic origin to attain mental, physical, and spiritual balance. The practise of Yoga can be traced back to prehistoric times to the Indus Valley Civilization. However, despite strong scientific backing about the benefits of practising Yoga, plenty of people still consider Yoga to be a gimmick. Through this article, I’ll attempt debunking some of the misconceptions surrounding Yoga so that more people be encouraged to practise the same.

1) “Yoga can only be practised by Hindus.”
Utterly ridiculous. Just because the practice of Yoga was traced back to prehistoric India, does not mean that Hindus have the right to practise Yoga exclusively. The purpose of Yoga is to bring about a balance between the body, the mind, and the soul which exists in every human being(and other animals). Every person, irrespective of their caste, creed, gender, religion, and race can practise Yoga and are also encouraged to.

2) “Only the young can practise Yoga successfully.”
This misconception arises from ascribing the practice of Yoga to Asanas, which does require a certain degree of flexibility the young inherently possess. However, as mentioned before, yoga can be practised by any person, whatever their age might be. The elderly are often encouraged to practise Yoga by their physicians because it has been known to lower blood pressure and blood cholesterol in addition to improving their overall cardiac health.

3) “Practising yoga will give you six-packs.”
I’ll give you some time to finish your laughter. Are you done? Good. If it is just six-packs you’re after, you’re better off following some high-intensity cardiovascular workout regimes rather than practising yoga because yoga, according to Sadhguru, “has other dimensions attached to it.” It is a practice of attaining a complete balance between your mind, body, and soul rather than a tool that you can use to burn a ton of calories.

4) “Yoga is easy to learn and can be done so through a book.”
Yoga is as much an art as it is science. Go to any bookstore and you’ll find a plethora of different books that claim that they can teach yoga in x number of days. However, the true benefits of yoga can only be reaped when it is practised the way it is supposed to, one that cannot be explained through words. It is best if you find a proper, certified yoga instructor before you embark on this spiritual journey.

A DONUT for the DONUT Day

Prep Time 25 mins
Cook Time 30 mins
Total Time 55 mins

My Donut Recipe is shallow fried and glazed for classic decadence. Make irresistible donuts at home in a matter of minutes.
Credits: @biggerbolderbaking

Servings: 10 -12

Ingredients

3 1/2 cups (1lb 2oz/497g) all-purpose flour
3/4 cup (6oz/170g) sugar
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg , optional
3/4 cup (6floz/170ml) buttermilk
1/4 cup (2oz/57g) butter, melted
2 eggs*
Vegetable oil , for frying

Instructions

1. Fill a pan with about 1 inch of vegetable oil then line a baking tray with a wire rack and paper towel for the donuts to cool and drain, set aside while making the dough.
2. In a medium bowl combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, salt and spices, set aside.
3. In another large bowl combine the melted butter, buttermilk and eggs. (Check notes for egg substitute)
4. Using a whisk, gradually whisk the dry ingredients into the wet until a sticky dough is formed.
5. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface and bring the dough together. Then use your palms to press the dough into roughly a 12-inch rectangle about 1/2 inch thick.
6. Before cutting out your dough, heat the oil over medium-low heat (this should take 5-7 minutes).
7. While the oil is heating, cut out your donuts: Using a 3 inch round cookie cutter and a 1-inch cookie cutter, cut out the donuts and the donut holes. You should be able to cut out about 12 donuts. If you have any extra dough left after cutting out, stick it all together, press it out and repeat the process until you have used up all of the dough.
Transfer your cut out donuts and donut holes to a baking tray and place the tray near your stove so you can easily place the donuts into the oil.
8. To make sure your oil is the right temperature test it with a donut hole. If it's hot enough this should puff up and be golden brown after cooking for roughly 2 minutes per side.
9. When ready to fry carefully drop the donuts into the oil. Allow the donuts to fry for about 3 minutes per side (donut holes for 2), or until golden brown. (Mommy help needed!)
10. Once puffed up and golden brown on both sides carefully remove from the oil using a fish turner, tongs or spider. Be careful as the oil will be very hot. DO NOT walk away from the pan at any stage of frying. If you need assistance with this step ask for help.
11. After transferring the cooked donuts to your wire rack, repeat the process with the remaining donuts and donut holes until they are all fried off.
12. If tossing in cinnamon sugar, this can be done as soon as the donuts are cool enough to handle.
13. If glazing the donuts do this while still warm so the glaze soaks in. Follow my directions for 5 donut glazes. Allow to cool for about 5-7 minutes then dunk both sides in the glaze. Return to wire rack to set (you may want to do this 2 times for an extra thick layer of glaze).

Enjoy immediately. These donuts are best eaten within 24 hours of cooking. Enjoy!
